PCYC Regatta Committee Minutes, February 20, 2024

Convened at PCYC. 18:05 hrs.

In attendance,  Rob Bova, Chair,  Bill Kuszmar, Treasurer, Gary Moore. Secretary, and Darrell Milburn, member.

Speaker Series Night:  Confirmed engagement of Seadon Wijsen of North Sales to preside over an “Open Forum Discussion” regarding Sail Trim, Race Strategies and getting started for the sailing season ahead. Where: PCYC Hall, When:  Thursday, March 21, 6:30 cash bar, 7:00 presentation begins.  Check out www.pcycsailing.com for details. Promotion posters will be made up for area club distribution. Otherwise, our website, Mass Bay posting and facebook mediums will be used to get the word out. Be sure to note parking limitations at Pcyc, clearly noting parking at Shetland/Storage lot.  Finger food, cheese and crackers will be provided to our guests along with the usual CASH BAR.  Depending on crowd size, round tables and chairs will be set up.

Movie Night:  Hold off for now.

Marine Yard Sale:  After lengthy discussion, the RC decided on having this event on Saturday May 4,  8:00 AM to Noon.  All area mariners are welcome to offer items for sale and to purchase many attractive items. Social media will be utilized along with Posters (Rob will update old stock posters) to get the word out.  No sales tables fees. Committee will coordinate this event with Jeff Plouff, Rear Com.

Treasurer’s report: Bill reports that we remain solvent.  One PHRF certificate was purchased.  Income sources are scant these days. Bill suggests we consider submitting an operational budget next year to the PCYC leadership detailing our annual operational needs that exceed our capacity to support with fees.  Bill noted a big rise in cost for our pcycsailing.com web site and will speak with committee member Lloyd M to see about lowering that cost.

3rd Annual Mass Bay Shorthanded Regatta,  Set for Saturday, June 22, 2024.  See our web site for details;  www.pcycsailing.com.  The Regatta Committee checked out our club’s trophy cabinet to get some ideas for recognizing the annual winners of this club sponsored Regatta.

Committee Membership:  Bill K proposed an idea that may at once enhance interest in the functions and purpose of the Regatta Committee while offering an opportunity to the PCYC boater who may have never had the opportunity to go for a sail. Why not offer members an invitation to “go sailing” on a particular day or two during the summer with a fellow member of the club who volunteers to skipper an “around the harbor tour” aboard their sailing craft. The RC would organize such a “meet and greet” type of event by soliciting club skippers who are willing to share their passion for sailing and offer a fellow club member or two the opportunity to enjoy searching for a breeze out on the sound.

Meeting adjourned at 1915 hours

Next scheduled RC meeting:   tba

Minutes prepared and submitted by Gary M, Secretary

Happy New Year sailors,  Below are the minutes of our Jan 4 RC meeting. Please note date change for the proposed Mass Bay Short Handed Regatta.  Comments and corrections welcomed.  Stay warm,   Gary M.   Secretary

PCYC Regatta Committee Minutes, January 3, 2024

Meeting convened at 1730 hours by Chair Rob Bova. In attendance were Rob B, Bill K , Gary M and Darrell M.

Regatta Committee status:  Bill K reports that former club Secretary Mike McMahon has an updated listing of PCYC sailboat owners that we may use to assist recruitment of Regatta Committee membership and/or interest in RC activities.  Mike may attend this meeting later on. Prospective new RC member Liam Mahoney (former owner of a 30’ Pearson) may join us later this evening.

Planning the 2024 Mass Bay Short Handed Regatta:  Discussion centered on setting a date for the PCYC sponsored MBSH Regatta.  Rob presented a Mass Bay Racing Schedule calendar to work with. Hopefully we will have a date set soon so Rob can communicate with Mitch at Mass Bay to confirm our regatta date at its next meeting on January 10th.

After lengthy discussion, we established a priority preference list of three dates. In order: June 16, July 14 and June 9.  If non of these  Sundays work out then a Saturday in June may be an option.  Our start time of 11 am would be helpful in that typically the Saturday Marblehead Racing Association races get underway at 12-12:30 hrs., allowing both fleets to share the open ocean.  Bill K to text Lloyd M to affirm availability of Committee Boat Scrimshaw.

BULLETIN< BULLETIN: Please note that since our RC meeting held on Jan. 3rd, member Lloyd Michaud has advised Chairman Rob B that he and the Race Committee boat are not available on the weekend of June 15/16.

Subsequent deliberation (1/06/24) by Chairman Rob B with Lloyd has established

Saturday, June 22 as our date for the MBSH Regatta. Member Bill K reports he

will begin recruitment of Committee Boat crew.

Winter/Spring RC Activities:  We discussed having a Speaker Night and/or a Movie Night while the fleet sleeps on the hard. Bill K suggested reaching out to Joe Harris with regard to the “Gryphon Solo 2 Around the World Race.  Bill also suggests checking out the prospect of showing the life story documentary of Buddy Melges.  Rob B suggested reaching out to a North Sails guy he knows to perhaps engage him for a talk about sail handling etc.  And finally, we discussed having another Marine Yard Sale as several of us have plenty of “sale” inventory.  Perhaps a mid May date would be better than April.

New Business:  The committee authorized Gary M to purchase a race starting horn system to replace the defective system we have.

Meeting adjourned at 1830 hours

Next scheduled RC meeting:  Wednesday February 7 at a time tba

Minutes prepared and submitted by Gary M, Secretary

PCYC Regatta Committee Minutes, June 12, 2024

Convened meeting at 12:05 hours at PCYC.

In attendance: Rob Bova, Bill K.. Lloyd M., and Gary M.

Rob and Bill reviewed sign up for PCYC’s Mass Bay Shorthanded Regatta, scheduled for Saturday, June 22, 2024 with a start time of 11.00 hours. Only three boats have entered to date. Decided on a minimum five boats starting to run the race. This will allow boats who compete to qualify for Mass Bay points. In 2023 eleven boats registered and seven raced.

In 2022 seven registered and 7 raced. We may combine fleets A (spinnaker) and F (cruising) for a single start sequence as number of entrants dictate. It takes three boats racing per fleet to be a “points qualifier race.”

There will be no “Skipper’s meeting prior to the race. Three courses have been charted out by Rob B. The Race Committee (Bill K, Aaron K., Barbara K., Loyd M., and Gary M.,, will select the appropriate course before the starting sequence begins, announced by VHF channel 72 and posted on board the Committee boat. All pertinent information concerning coursers and racing rules can be found on our PCYC Sailing Web Site, pcycsailing.com.

The Committee Boat will be on station by 10.30 hours, with start/finish orange pennant on station by 10:45 hrs.

Rob and Bill discussed the need to clarify accounting of PHRF certificate payments with the host vendor.

The Committee discussed a possible “After the Race” scenario where all participants are invited to PCYC to learn the race results and to share in a light repast of cold cut or salad sandwiches. All will be welcome to make purchases at the club’s bar. Awards for placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd will be made along with a prize of a selected liquor. The decision to enact this after race plan or amend it will occur next week at the re-convening of this RC committee mtg., possibly on Tuesday at noon, June 18th.

Meeting adjourned at 13:15 hours

Meeting re-convened at 12:08 hours, Tuesday June 18, 2024 at PCYC.

Reviewed extended weather forecast. Light winds predicted lending selection of shortest course preferable. As of this hour, there remain only four boats signed up for the race. Since three are A fleet, that would support conducting the race, as that fleet would qualify for seasonal points. Also, it is likely that only one starting sequence would be conducted, including A (Spinnaker) and F (cruising) boats. Final decision regarding number of start sequences will be made by the Race Committee on the day of the race and announced per the Racing Rules. The Race Committee this year is made up of Gary Moore, Bill Kuszmar, Barbara Kuszmar, Aaron Kuszmar and Committee Boat skipper Lloyd Michaud, captain of the 30’ Cape Dory power boat christened “Scrimshaw”.

Gary M. Reviewed the starting sequence protocol, including the “over early” process of notifying the vessel(s) via VHF channel 72, incurring a 10 minute penalty (no restart).

Also reviewed was the race postponement procedure (two blasts and raising AP flag, plus VHF radio announcement). A postponement would likely incur a minimum 45 minute hold for suitable racing conditions. This race will have a five hour limit.

After the race, racers will be invited to PCYC for race results and awards. The Regatta Committee will provide our racing guests with either pizza or cold cut sandwiches along with an invitation to purchase their favorite libation at the club’s bar.

As of this writing Wednesday, June 19, there are six boats registered with Regatta Man for this race, 5 A class and 1 F class.

Meeting adjourned at 1:35 pm.
